Wordless Book Wednesday – Wave

Have you ever watched a child play tag with the waves? They generally have a look of pure delight on their faces.

Last week Big Kid said to me “Mommy, sometimes the ocean jumps up and kisses my face”. I’m still thinking about it. It is such a poetic way to think about the ocean waves smashing you in the face.

The night after she said that I pulled out Wave by Suzy Lee, a truly delightful wordless book about a girl and a wave. Upon arriving at the beach, the little girl runs down to meet the waves. Once there, she and a group of playful birds go back and forth with the waves, playing coy, trying to scare them, commanding them, and finally getting drenched by them. The black, white, and blue illustrations convey so much emotion.

Big Kid loves this book because she can read it herself. I love it because I’m always left with a smile on my face thinking of my own childhood romps with waves, and the similar adventures my daughters are now having.

You can find this and some of our other beach favorites on my Bookshop Page. You can also check out an extensive list of books we used for our beach reading last year on the book list page.
