First Chapter Books

These are some of our favorite first chapter books.

Mercy Watson by Kate DiCamillo & Chris Van Dusen –Mercy Watson, a toast loving pig who has been adopted by the Watsons, gets herself into the funniest situations, and always finds her way out again. In the first story she unknowingly rescues the Watson’s who’s bed has fallen through a hole in the floor by alerting the fire department. This whole series keeps us entertained read after read with the charming cast of characters and child-friendly predicaments. The writing is perfect for pre-schoolers transitioning to longer texts.

The Fabled Stables: Willa the Whisp by Jonathan Auxier & Olga Demidova- This brand new series (we can’t wait for the second one!) tells the story of a boy who takes care of all the one-of-a-kind magical creatures in the fabled stables at the top of the world. The first book introduces the characters and tells the story of Auggie who must venture into an unknown land to save a Wisp even though he is unsure how to do so. The writing is fast-paced with rich vocabulary, perfect for stretching pre-schoolers and elementary aged kids. The bright illustrations are fun to look at, and enrich the story.

Princess Cora and the Crocodile by Laura Amy Schlitz & Brian Floca – Princess Cora’s family schedules her life from the minute she wakes up until she falls asleep, getting her ready to become queen. Princess Cora longs to run and play, and finally wishes for a dog, who she believes will make her feel better. When her Fairy God Mother sends a crocodile instead the fun begins for everyone. We have listened to this story at least 60 times and my girls never tire of it.

My Fathers Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett and Ruth Chrisman Gannett – Wishing he could fly, Elmer sets off to a magical island to rescue a baby dragon. Once there he encounters animals he must outwit in order to find the dragon who finally whisks him off to home. The chapters are just the right length, and the adventure is just suspenseful enough to keep young kids engaged.
