Coping With Loss

Coping with loss is a painful, but inevitable part of life. Using books to help your child work through all the feelings that come with loss can be helpful for everyone.

Dance Like a Leaf by AJ Irving & Claudia Navarro – A young girl and her grandmother always enjoyed fall when they would drink warm tea, wrap themselves in scarves, and dance like leaves. As the years pass the girl provides more support for her tired and aging grandmother. One year, when fall comes, Grandma goes to sleep and does not wake up. The girl spends the following year remembering her grandmother and all the things they did together.

The books listed above would also be appropriate for elementary-aged students, and would promote discussion.

Noodle Helps Gabriel Say Goodbye by Caryn Rivadeneira – tells the story of a Helper Hound who is on his third home through no fault of his own. His first boy had terrible allergies, so could not keep him. His second man passed away, so he knows loss. Noodle goes on to help a young boy who is grieving the death of his grandfather by being his friend, all surrounded by a helpful community of people.
