On the Horizon

I read this middle grade book for myself this weekend, and I’m so glad I did! If you have a middle grader in your life, or enjoy World War II literature, this is a book I would highly recommend.

Two-time Newbery medalist Lois Lowry wrote On the Horizon in verse, from multiple perspectives, and it is illustrated by the extremely talented Kenard Pak. She weaves her own experiences in with those of real people at Pearl Harbor and Hirohima, humanizing both sides and putting faces and names to the devastation of war. While discussing individuals, Lowry highlights how we are all connected and offers hope that after time and healing, even those struck by tragedy can become friends.

I will be adding this to my classroom library. You can also find it on my Bookshop Shop on Bookshop.org, an online bookstore with a mission to financially support local, independent bookstores by making a donation every time a book is purchased on their site.
