Lesson 1 in Learning Seashore Animals (You can find more info about that in this post), sets the scene, when Danny Field Mouse finds himself thrust into life at the seashore. We paired Chapter 1 of The Burgess Seashore Book for Children with two picture books that discuss the seashore in general, and introduce some of the amazing critters we will meet later.
A Day at the Beach by Mircea Vasiliu is out of print, but can still be found used. Our copy was gifted to us by my mother who has saved it since my childhood. It tells the story of a family’s day at the beach, and naturally weaves in an introduction to and information about a wide variety of animals found along the shore when the two children head out for a walk after lunch.
The Seashore Book by Charlotte Zolotow & Wendell Minor is a beautifully written and illustrated tale about a mother and son who pretend they are at the beach while in their mountain home. While there, the boy discovers a few of the sights, activities, sounds, and animals that make the seashore the special place it is. The descriptive language in this book is brilliant, really helping you imagine you are there as well.
