Our backyard garden is in full swing; we had our first harvest of radishes over the weekend! Big Kid and Little Kid both got to pick them, and loved it.
To go along with our radish harvest we read Tops and Bottoms by Janet Stevens.
The Story: This trickster tale tells the story of a clever rabbit and his neighbor, the lazy, but land owning bear. Rabbit approaches Bear with a business proposition explaining he and his family will do all the work while Bear gets to rest. First rabbit tells Bear he can have all the tops of the plants that are grown, and goes on to plant radishes, carrots, and beets. Realizing he’s been tricked, Bear insists he get the bottoms next time, so Rabbit plants celery and lettuce. The third time Bear demands the tops and bottoms, so clever rabbit plants corn and takes the middle. Bear learns he needs to work for his supper, and Rabbit takes the proceeds and buys some land from Bear.
This is a cute, and beautifully illustrated story, perfect for this time of year when our root vegetables are starting to be harvest ready.
