Continuing on from my last post, butterfly week in Exploring Nature With Children is coming, and we are excited!
Last week Big Kid made the butterfly life cycle pictured as part of her Montessori distance learning. This is the perfect way to get us started learning a little more about how caterpillars complete metamorphosis to become a butterfly.
We’ll be using these two books, along with the life cycle page from the Sylvan Reverie which you can grab here.
From Caterpillar to Butterfly by Deborah Helligman & Bari Weissman – a class adopts a caterpillar and welcomes it into their classroom. The students watch as the caterpillar grows and finally completes its metamorphosis into a butterfly. There are great explanations of all stages of the butterflies life cycle, along with clear illustrations.
Where Butterflies Grow by Joanne Ryder & Lynne Cherry – a pair of children find caterpillar eggs in a spring garden. The rest of the book they spend imagining they are a caterpillar who grows, builds a chrysalis and emerges as a butterfly. The vocabulary and descriptive language in this book is beautiful.
