Sidewalk Flowers by JonArno Lawson & Sydney Smith is the touching wordless picture book about a girl who collects wildflowers on a walk with her distracted father. As she gifts each flower to a person or creature in her path, the girl, receiver, and city are transformed by her selfless act.
There is so much to think and talk about here: being kind, how small acts of kindness can transform you and the people around you, how there is beauty everywhere if you just slow down and look, how children can make a difference, and so much more.
In response to Sidewalk Flowers we made kindness rocks to hide around our neighborhood, kind of like the girl left flowers around her neighborhood. If you want to know more about the Kindness Rocks Project you can check it out here. Basically you paint and decorate a rock, which you then leave in your neighborhood for someone to find. Big Kid painted her rocks and then I wrote simple, inspirational messages on them. You never know when you could turn someone’s day around!
If you have not seen this book I highly recommend taking a look! To check out our other Kid Lit Kindness Challenge activities click here.
Have you ever made kindness rocks or left inspirational notes randomly around your neighborhood?
